Our teachers have met as grade-level teams to devise guidelines for homework for each grade level. Homework may look different from class to class, but these guidelines will be followed by all teachers.
Grade 4 Homework Guidelines
Total Time: No more than 30 minutes each night
- 15 minutes (min) reading daily
- All work will be assigned early in the week so that there is more than one evening to complete
- Math work will focus on practicing math facts. This will sometimes include work based on what has been taught previously in class. Students should always be able to complete this work independently.
- Word Study will be sent home weekly
- Special project work will be sent as homework occassionally
- Request that parents sign agendas daily
- No Homework on Fridays
- Homework will be adapted to meet specific student needs
Grade 5 Homework Guidelines
Total Time: No more than 35-40 minutes each night
- 15-20 minutes of reading daily
- agenda’s will be used to record homework and we request that they are signed by parents
- Work will be assigned at the beginning of the week and will be due at the end of the week.
- Math work will focus on independent skill practice using games or work sheets (no more than 1 a week)
- Word Study will focus on practice and re-enforcement of skills (no more than 3x a week)
- Homework will be adapted to meet specific student needs
Grade 6 Homework Guidelines
Total Time: No more than 45 minutes each night
- 30 minutes of reading
- Math work will be independent work focusing on re-enforcement of taught material or practice of facts
- Student agenda use – at the beginning of the year, teachers will support the habit of daily use with signatures and daily checks, The goal is to build independence by the end of the year.
- School work may be occasionally sent home to be completed if a student chooses not to use their time wisely in class.
- A deadline will always be given with ample time to finish (over several nights)
- Homework will be adapted to meet specific student needs
Parents are always encouraged to reach out to your child’s teacher if your child is struggling or unable to complete homework independently.
